A franchise can reduce some of the uncertainty of starting a business, but it does not remove business risk. The best decisions come from comparing facts, testing assumptions and getting independent advice.

01

Why Jan Aushadhi Kendra is a high-intent 2026 search

Searches such as “Jan Aushadhi Kendra kaise khole”, “online apply”, “cost”, “margin” and “licence” show that people want an actionable business route, not only scheme information. The official PMBJP page says more than 19,000 Kendras were functional by March 2026, while the published programme target is 25,000 by 31 March 2027. Expansion creates opportunity, but approval and local viability are not automatic.

02

It is a government scheme outlet, not a normal private franchise

PMBJP is implemented by the Pharmaceuticals & Medical Devices Bureau of India under the Department of Pharmaceuticals. Entrepreneurs operate dedicated Kendras under scheme conditions, but they do not buy a conventional commercial franchise with unrestricted pricing and product choice. Read the live PMBI rules and agreement before treating any third-party “franchise package” as genuine.

Questions worth asking

What is included in the investment? What support continues after launch? Which assumptions drive the payback estimate?

03

Use only janaushadhi.gov.in for the application

The official brochure directs applicants to janaushadhi.gov.in. Do not pay a consultant, agent or lookalike website for guaranteed allotment. Save the application number, payment receipt and every official communication; independently verify any bank account or document request through the contact details published on the government portal.

04

Space and pharmacist are core eligibility checks

The official opening brochure states that an applicant needs owned or hired space of at least 120 square feet, supported by ownership, allotment or lease documents. It also requires proof of a pharmacist registered with the State Pharmacy Council, either at application stage or as permitted during final approval. Confirm current distance and location rules before signing a lease.

05

The ₹5,000 fee is not the total setup cost

The brochure lists a non-refundable ₹5,000 application fee and exemptions for specified categories and locations. Your full project cost may also include property deposit, counters, racks, refrigerator, computer and printer, internet, CCTV, power backup, licences, pharmacist and staff salaries, opening working capital and local launch activity. Obtain current specifications before purchasing equipment.

06

Use the current incentive rule—not an old blog screenshot

The live PMBJP overview states that from April 2026 the monthly purchase incentive is 12%, capped at ₹12,000, split between sales and stock components. Older brochures and articles may show different percentages or ceilings. Verify the rule that appears in your current approval and agreement, and do not count a temporary or conditional incentive as permanent profit.

07

Build income from sales, margin and operating cost

Request the current product-level margin and settlement rules directly from PMBI. Then model monthly sales by prescription mix and repeat demand, subtract pharmacist and staff cost, rent, utilities, expiry or damage responsibility, delivery or local promotion, software and finance cost. The scheme’s national average or another store’s turnover cannot guarantee your outlet’s net income.

08

Inventory availability can decide repeat business

Map common chronic and acute medicine demand around hospitals, clinics and residential catchments. Track fill rate, stock-outs, reorder timing, substitutes, batch expiry, cold-chain items and customer requests. A low-price promise brings a first visit; reliable availability, correct dispensing, billing and respectful service bring the customer back.

09

Pharmacy compliance and patient safety remain your responsibility

A Kendra still operates as a pharmacy. Confirm the applicable retail drug licence, registered-pharmacist presence, storage temperatures, prescription handling, schedule-drug controls, invoices, records, complaint process and state-specific requirements with the relevant drug-control authority. Never replace a prescribed medicine or give clinical advice outside authorised professional scope.

10

Jan Aushadhi pre-application checklist

Check the live district opportunity and location rules, use only the official portal, validate the pharmacist and lease documents, and prepare a complete setup-plus-working-capital budget. Survey nearby clinics and Kendras, model a weak-sales month, verify current margin and incentive clauses, and have the final agreement reviewed professionally. JustStartup is not affiliated with PMBI and cannot allot a Kendra.
